Big Corn Island
Costa Caribe Sur, Nicaragua
Why visit Big Corn Island?
Big Corn Island (Isla Grande del Maíz) is the larger and more developed of Nicaragua's two Corn Islands, located approximately 70 km off the Caribbean coast. The island has a circumference of about 10 km, a ring road, the regional airstrip, and most of the infrastructure serving the Corn Island pair—including government offices, the main port, and the majority of the permanent population.
The island has a Creole (Afro-Caribbean) majority population with English surnames and Creole English as the primary language, though Spanish is increasingly common due to Mestizo migration from the mainland. The culture is Caribbean—reggae, calypso, and creole cooking are everyday features. The pace of life is slow, and the island's economy is based on fishing, lobster harvesting, and a growing tourism sector.
Big Corn has several beaches, the best-known being Long Beach on the south side and the beaches near Brig Bay. While most travellers prefer Little Corn for its beauty and car-free charm, Big Corn has its own appeal: better infrastructure, easier logistics, good fishing, and a more authentic island community feel.
