Sandy Bay

Costa Caribe Norte, Nicaragua

Why visit Sandy Bay?

Sandy Bay is a small coastal settlement on Nicaragua's Caribbean coast, located in the municipality of Puerto Cabezas in Costa Caribe Norte. The community sits along the Caribbean shoreline, with a long sandy beach and access to offshore reefs and the vast coastal forests of the region.

The settlement is predominantly Miskito, with a small Creole population. The economy is based on fishing, small-scale agriculture, and some artisanal gold mining in the interior. Sandy Bay is known locally as a launching point for expeditions to the Río Plátano Biosphere Reserve, the UNESCO World Heritage Site that protects one of Central America's most biodiverse areas.

The climate is tropical and humid year-round, with temperatures averaging 27–30°C. The driest months are March–April and September–October, while June–August bring the heaviest rains. Mosquitoes and sand flies are prevalent—bring strong insect repellent.
