Pieterburen

Groningen, Netherlands

Why visit Pieterburen?

Pieterburen is a tiny village in the Hogeland region of Groningen, approximately 25 km north of Groningen city, with a population of around 400. Despite its small size, it is one of the most visited places in the northern Netherlands, thanks to two claims to fame: the Zeehondencentrum (Seal Rehabilitation Centre) and its role as the start (or end) point of the Pieterpad, the Netherlands' most famous long-distance hiking trail (498 km from Pieterburen to Maastricht). Pieterburen lies in the heart of the Hogeland, a high, open agricultural landscape of rich clay soils, grand farmsteads, and Romanesque churches.

What are the things to do?

  • Zeehondencentrum Pieterburen (Seal Rehabilitation Centre) — The village's main attraction: a world-renowned centre that rescues, rehabilitates, and releases sick and orphaned seals from the Wadden Sea. Visitors can see the seals in the recovery pools and learn about Wadden Sea ecology through interactive exhibits. The centre treats hundreds of seals annually and is a leading authority on seal conservation (€10 adults, €7 children, open daily 10:00–17:00).

  • Pieterpad Monument — The start point of the Pieterpad, marked by a bronze statue of a hiker at the edge of the village. A popular photo spot.

  • Pieterburen Church — A 13th-century Romanesque church with a leaning tower, typical of Hogeland churches. The interior contains medieval wall paintings (open for visits in summer).

  • Hogeland Landscape — The open, rolling farmland around Pieterburen is the classic Hogeland landscape: huge brick farmsteads with grand gates (rentpoorten), straight roads, and wide skies.

  • Visit the seal centre — Allow 1–2 hours to tour the centre, watch the feeding times (daily at 11:00 and 15:00), and learn about Wadden Sea ecology.

  • Walk or cycle the Hogeland — Pieterburen is the perfect base for exploring the Hogeland's quiet country lanes, Romanesque churches, and terp (artificial dwelling mound) villages.

  • Start the Pieterpad — Even if you don't hike the full 498 km to Maastricht, walk the first 5 km section through the Hogeland countryside to Westernieland.

  • Guided mudflat hike (Wadlopen) — Pieterburen is one of the main departure points for guided walks across the Wadden Sea from the mainland to the sandbanks. Book with a licensed guide (Stichting WAD).
