Overview

Koshi Province occupies the entire eastern flank of Nepal, and within its borders it compresses the country's full vertical range — from the sweltering Tarai plains around Biratnagar to the summit of Mount Everest on the Tibetan frontier. Few provinces anywhere offer such variety: tea-carpeted hill ridges, the Sherpa homeland of the Khumbu, the third-highest mountain on earth, and one of South Asia's finest birdwatching wetlands.

The province is named for the Koshi River, the great waterway that drains eastern Nepal's mountains and spreads across the lowlands. Travellers know Koshi above all as the gateway to the Everest region, but its hill towns — tea-growing Ilam, the bazaar town of Dhankuta, the lively city of Dharan — reward those who linger, and its remote far-east corner shelters the wild approach to Kanchenjunga, the world's third-highest peak.

It suits trekkers, naturalists and travellers curious about a less-visited Nepal. The classic Everest itinerary aside, Koshi sees relatively few foreign visitors on its hill and Tarai trails, which is much of its appeal.

When to Visit

Autumn (October–November) and spring (March–April) are the prime seasons, as everywhere in Nepal: clear post-monsoon skies for the Khumbu, and rhododendron blooms in the hills. The Everest region is best trekked in these windows; winter brings deep cold and snow-blocked passes at altitude, though lower Solukhumbu trails stay open.

The tea hills around Ilam are at their greenest and most photogenic during and just after the monsoon (June–September), when the rest of high Koshi is off-limits to trekkers. The Tarai around Biratnagar is hot and humid much of the year — pleasant only in the cool months of November to February. For the Koshi Tappu wetland, the winter months bring the largest concentrations of migratory birds.

Getting Around

Koshi's lowland hub is Biratnagar, Nepal's second-largest city, with an airport linking it to Kathmandu and a road network fanning out across the eastern Tarai. The East–West Highway runs the length of the plains through Itahari, the key junction where roads branch north into the hills.

From Itahari, the BP Highway and hill roads climb to Dharan and on to Dhankuta, Hile and Basantapur; another route reaches the tea town of Ilam in the far southeast. Reaching the Everest region means flying — the celebrated and weather-dependent flight into Lukla (often from Kathmandu, sometimes via Ramechhap) — or a long drive to roadheads such as Salleri followed by days of walking. Far-eastern Taplejung, the Kanchenjunga gateway, is reached by a long mountain road or by air. Local buses and shared jeeps connect the hill towns; distances are short on the map but slow on the ground.

Cuisine

Koshi's food shifts with its elevation. In the Tarai around Biratnagar and Itahari, the table is essentially that of the eastern Gangetic plain — rice, lentil dal, vegetable curries, river fish and plenty of Maithili and Indian-influenced sweets. In the hills, the standard dal bhat tarkari prevails, eaten twice daily, alongside the eastern Nepali staple dhindo (a thick millet or buckwheat porridge).

The province's most distinctive product is Ilam tea, grown on the southeastern hills and brewed everywhere as sweet milk tea; estate visits offer fresh orthodox leaf. In the Khumbu, Sherpa kitchens turn out hearty high-altitude fare — Sherpa stew (shyakpa), potato dishes such as rildok, Tibetan-style momos and butter tea — designed for cold and exertion. Dharan is well known among Nepalis for its meat dishes and street food, including sekuwa, char-grilled skewered meat.

Culture & Festivals

Koshi is one of Nepal's most ethnically layered provinces. The hills are home to Limbu, Rai, Sherpa, Tamang and Gurung communities, the Tarai to Maithili and Tharu populations, producing a rich festival calendar. The pan-Nepali festivals of Dashain and Tihar (Sept–Nov) are the year's biggest celebrations.

Distinctly eastern is Chasok Tangnam, the Limbu harvest thanksgiving festival held around November, and the Kirat communities' observance of Sakela/Sakewa, a dance festival marked twice a year by Rai people. The Sherpas of the Khumbu celebrate Mani Rimdu, a vivid masked-dance festival at Tengboche Monastery in autumn, and Losar, the Tibetan new year, in winter. The hill ridges are also known for the dhol and traditional dances of Kirat culture, and for handwoven textiles and the dhaka cloth used in the Nepali topi cap.
