Overview

Gandaki Province is Nepal's trekking heartland. Stretching from the lowland edge near Chitwan up to the Tibetan border, it is dominated by the Annapurna massif — a ring of 7,000- and 8,000-metre peaks — and centred on Pokhara, the lakeside resort city that is Nepal's adventure capital. If a single province captures the postcard image of Nepal, snow giants reflected in still water above a green valley, it is this one.

The province's range is remarkable. South of the mountains lie warm valleys and the historic hill town of Bandipur; the great trekking trails of the Annapurna Circuit and Annapurna Base Camp thread its heart; and beyond the main range, in the rain shadow, lies Mustang — an arid, Tibetan-Buddhist kingdom of walled towns, cave monasteries and ochre cliffs. To the east, the Manaslu Circuit offers one of the country's finest treks.

Gandaki suits trekkers above all, but Pokhara's lakeside ease, paragliding and day trips make it equally rewarding for travellers who never lace up a pair of boots.

When to Visit

October–November and March–April are the prime seasons: stable weather, clear mountain views and the trails at their best. Spring adds rhododendron forests in bloom on the Annapurna foothills. Winter (December–February) keeps Pokhara mild and lower treks open, though high passes such as the Thorong La may close with snow.

Gandaki has one great seasonal exception: Upper Mustang and the upper Kali Gandaki valley sit in the Himalayan rain shadow and stay dry through the monsoon (June–September), making summer the ideal time to visit Mustang while the rest of Nepal is wet. Pokhara itself is monsoon-lush but cloud often hides the peaks. Time a trek to avoid the busiest autumn weeks on the most popular trails if you prefer solitude.

Getting Around

Pokhara is the province's hub, with an international airport, frequent tourist buses from Kathmandu and Chitwan, and roads fanning out to the trailheads. The improved Kathmandu–Pokhara highway has shortened the journey, and shared jeeps and local buses reach the valleys.

Trailheads such as Nayapul, Besisahar, Jomsom and Soti Khola are reached by jeep or local bus; roads now penetrate deep into the Annapurna and Manaslu valleys, shortening — and changing the character of — the classic treks. Jomsom has an airport with short, scenic flights from Pokhara, the usual fast access to Lower Mustang and Muktinath. Upper Mustang and the Manaslu Circuit are restricted areas requiring special permits arranged through a registered agency and a guide. Within Pokhara, taxis and ride-hailing apps cover the lakeside and town.

Cuisine

Across Gandaki the everyday meal is dal bhat tarkari, and on the trekking trails it is the reliable, refillable staple that powers walkers up the valleys. The province's hill communities — Gurung, Magar and Thakali — each bring their own table. The most celebrated is Thakali cuisine, from the Kali Gandaki valley around Jomsom and Marpha: a refined, balanced set meal of rice, lentils, vegetables, meat and a tangy buckwheat or chilli accompaniment, widely regarded as one of Nepal's finest regional cuisines.

Marpha is famous for its apple orchards, and apple brandy, cider, pies and dried fruit are sold all along the upper Kali Gandaki. In Mustang, the food turns Tibetan — tsampa, butter tea, thukpa and momos. Pokhara's lakeside is Nepal's other great traveller-dining strip, with everything from trail-fuel breakfasts to lake-fish curries and international menus.

Culture & Festivals

Gandaki is the homeland of the Gurung and Magar peoples — communities long associated with Gurkha military service — and, in the high north, of the Thakali of the Kali Gandaki and the Tibetan-Buddhist population of Mustang. The national festivals of Dashain and Tihar are the year's largest, and Holi is celebrated with gusto in Pokhara.

The province's most distinctive event is Tiji, a three-day masked-dance festival held each spring in Lo Manthang, Upper Mustang — a dramatic ritual drama of the triumph of good over a demon, performed in the walled capital. Gurung communities mark Tamu Lhosar (their new year, around late December) with circle dances and feasting, and Buddhist Mustang observes Losar. Gurung folk traditions — the rodi social gatherings, circle dances and honey-hunting on cliff faces — remain part of hill life.

Travelling during a festival? We'll plan around the crowds.
