Overview

Zambezi is Namibia's easternmost region, a narrow panhandle that juts into the heart of southern Africa where four nations meet. Formerly known as Caprivi, the region is named after the Zambezi River, one of Africa's great waterways, which forms its northern border with Zambia and Botswana. Unlike the rest of Namibia's arid landscapes, Zambezi is lush and tropical, with permanent rivers, floodplains, papyrus swamps, and dense woodland.

The region is a premier safari destination, hosting three national parks — Bwabwata, Mudumu, and Nkasa Rupara — that protect significant populations of elephant, buffalo, hippo, crocodile, and a wealth of birdlife. The town of Katima Mulilo serves as the regional capital and main gateway. Zambezi offers a distinctly different Namibia experience: one of water-based wildlife viewing, mokoro (dugout canoe) excursions, and lush green landscapes.

When to Visit

The dry winter months from May to October are the best time for wildlife viewing, as animals congregate around the permanent waterways. The rainy season (November to April) transforms the region into a lush green paradise but makes roads difficult and mosquitoes more prevalent. The floodwaters peak around March to May, creating excellent conditions for boat-based safaris.

Getting Around

Katima Mulilo is connected to the rest of Namibia by the Trans-Caprivi Highway, a paved road. The B8 highway runs through the region from Ngoma to Katima Mulilo and continues to Zambia. Sand roads connect the national parks and smaller settlements. A 4x4 vehicle is essential for exploring the parks, especially in the rainy season. Domestic flights connect Katima Mulilo Airport (MPA) to Windhoek and other Namibian cities.

Cuisine

Zambezi's cuisine differs notably from the rest of Namibia, reflecting its tropical location and the traditions of the Lozi people. Fresh fish from the rivers — bream and tigerfish — feature prominently. Mahangu (pearl millet) porridge is a staple, served with vegetable relishes, chicken, or fish. Wild spinach and seasonal fruits add variety to the diet.

Culture & Festivals

Zambezi is home to the Lozi, Subia, and San peoples, among others. The Lozi are known for their elaborate annual Kuomboka ceremony, in which the king travels by barge to higher ground as the floodwaters rise. While this ceremony primarily takes place in Zambia's Western Province, the cultural traditions extend into Namibia. Traditional music, dance, and storytelling remain vibrant.
