Overview

Omaheke is a region in eastern Namibia on the edge of the Kalahari Desert. Its name means "the place of the sandy plains" in the Herero language. The region is a vast cattle-farming area with acacia savannah and red Kalahari sand. The regional capital, Gobabis, is known as the "Wild West" town of Namibia.

When to Visit

The dry winter months (May to October) are best. Summer is hot with occasional afternoon thunderstorms.

Getting Around

Gobabis is on the B6 highway from Windhoek to Botswana's Buitepos border post, a paved road in good condition. Secondary roads are gravel.
