Overview

Erongo is a region on Namibia's Atlantic coast, defined by the dramatic meeting of the Namib Desert, the Atlantic Ocean, and ancient granite mountains. The region is named after the iconic Spitzkoppe, often called the "Matterhorn of Namibia," a spectacular granite peak that rises 700 metres from the desert floor. The coastal cities of Swakopmund and Walvis Bay are Namibia's premier beach destinations and adventure activity hubs.

Swakopmund, with its distinct German colonial architecture, is the adventure capital of Namibia, offering sandboarding, skydiving, dune driving, and marine safaris. Walvis Bay, with its enormous natural harbour, is a centre for marine life, including flamingo colonies, dolphins, and seals. The region also includes historic mining towns like Karibib and Usakos, and the artist colony of Omaruru.

When to Visit

The best time to visit is from October to April when the coastal fog is less frequent and temperatures are warm. The winter months (May to August) bring the famous Atlantic fog and cooler temperatures, but also clearer skies inland. The coast is pleasantly mild year-round.
