Maungdaw

Rakhine, Myanmar

Why visit Maungdaw?

Maungdaw is a border town in northern Rakhine State, on the Naf River across from Bangladesh's Cox's Bazar district. It has historically had a large Rohingya population and has been at the center of the Rohingya refugee crisis since violence escalated in 2016–2017. Fighting between the Myanmar military and the Arakan Army reached the town through 2024, ending in an Arakan Army victory that December after mass civilian displacement; some residents have since been allowed to return under difficult conditions. Access for foreign visitors is restricted and requires special permits, and the security and humanitarian situation remains unstable.
