Mudon
Mon, Myanmar
Why visit Mudon?
Mudon is a town in Mon State, roughly 29 km south of Mawlamyine along the highway that continues on to Thanbyuzayat, Kyaikkami, and Setse Beach. It is best known as the nearby site of Win Sein Taw Ya — the world's largest reclining Buddha, 180 m long and 30 m high, part of a complex that also includes hundreds of statues of Buddha's disciples lining the approach road and a second reclining Buddha under construction facing the original. A temple festival is held each February marking the birthday of the site's founding monk. Mudon itself is a market town local for handweaving — women here are noted for weaving red-checked longyis on traditional wooden looms.
The best time to visit is November to February.
