Tetouan
Tanger-Tétouan-Al Hoceïma, Morocco
Why visit Tetouan?
Tetouan lies in northern Morocco at the foot of the Rif Mountains, 60 km east of Tangier and 10 km inland from the Mediterranean Sea. Known locally as La Paloma Blanca (The White Dove) for its whitewashed building facades, the city was rebuilt in the late 15th century by Andalusian refugees fleeing Spain after the fall of Granada. This Hispano-Moorish legacy remains visible across the city's architecture, artisan workshops, food traditions, and Northern Moroccan Arabic dialect.
The city centers on a UNESCO World Heritage medina that functions as an active residential and trading district rather than a tourist enclosure. Directly west of the medina lies the Ensanche, a grid of Spanish colonial avenues built during the Spanish Protectorate (1912–1956). Tetouan remains a major regional center for traditional Moroccan crafts, supported by institutions like the Royal Artisanal School where master craftspeople teach zellige tile cutting, wood painting, and leather tooling.
Tetouan has a Mediterranean climate influenced by the sea and the surrounding Rif foothills. Summer (July and August) brings high temperatures between 28°C and 34°C, though coastal sea breezes prevent the intense heat found further inland. Winter (November to March) sees daytime temperatures ranging from 8°C to 16°C with rainfall concentrated between December and February. Spring and autumn bring moderate daily temperatures of 18°C to 26°C.
