Durmitor National Park

Why visit Durmitor National Park?

Durmitor National Park is a stunning UNESCO World Heritage Site located in northwestern Montenegro. The park is renowned for its dramatic landscapes, which are divided into two main, interconnected parts: the deep Tara River Canyon (one of the deepest canyons in Europe) and the rugged Durmitor mountain range. The highest peak in the massif is Bobotov Kuk, which reaches an elevation of 2,523 meters above sea level.

The park's dramatic topography was formed by glaciers and is characterized by numerous glacial lakes, locally known as "mountain eyes" (gorske oči), dense pine forests, and alpine meadows. It is a major hub for outdoor recreation in Montenegro, drawing hikers, mountaineers, and rafters in the summer, and skiers and snowboarders in the winter.

How do you get there?

By Plane

The nearest major international airports are Podgorica Airport (TGD), located approximately 130 km to the south, and Tivat Airport (TIV), about 170 km to the southwest. From either airport, travelers typically rent a car or take a bus from the central bus stations in Podgorica or Tivat to Žabljak, the main gateway town to the park.

By Car / Road

Car is the most convenient way to reach Durmitor National Park due to limited public transportation in the mountainous regions of Montenegro.

  • From Podgorica: Take the M-6 road north to Žabljak (approximately 120 km, taking around 2 hours).
  • From Bosnia and Herzegovina: Take the M-3 (E762) highway, which crosses the border and passes through the scenic Piva River Valley.
  • From Serbia: Take the M-6 road via Prijepolje and Pljevlja. This route crosses the Tara River Bridge, a prominent landmark of the park.

The entry fee to the national park is €5 per day (as of 2025). While visitors entering via remote forest paths may not always encounter ticket checks, park rangers frequently patrol the main gate near Crno Jezero (Black Lake) and other popular lakes, especially on weekends, to check and sell tickets.

Car is the primary method of traversing the park's paved roads. The M-6 and M-3 highways are well-maintained two-lane roads. For a scenic route between Žabljak and Plužine, drivers can take the narrow but fully paved road through the Sedlo Pass. Drivers should remain alert for cyclists and roaming sheep on these narrower mountain roads.

Bicycling is popular in the park, which features numerous marked bike paths. However, the terrain is challenging with very steep and long ascents, making it suitable mainly for experienced cyclists.

For hiking and navigation, the local trails are well-mapped on OpenStreetMap. Visitors are advised to download offline map applications such as OsmAnd or Mapy.cz, or download GPX/KML trail files via Waymarked Trails before entering the park, as mobile signals can be weak or non-existent in the mountains.

What are the things to do?

  • Đurđevića Tara Bridge (Most na Tari): A spectacular concrete arch bridge spanning the Tara River Canyon. Rising 170 meters above the river, it offers panoramic views of the canyon. Located at the junction of the Mojkovac, Pljevlja, and Žabljak roads.

  • Sedlo Pass: A high mountain pass on the R16 (also known as P14) road, situated at an elevation of 1,900 meters above sea level. Easily accessible by car or bicycle, it serves as a major trailhead for hikes into the high peaks, including the 4.9 km trail to Bobotov Kuk. Parking at the pass is marked as paid on OpenStreetMap, though active fee collection is infrequent.

  • Ziplining: Several operators offer zipline rides across the Tara River Canyon next to the Đurđevića Tara Bridge, allowing visitors to glide high above the river. Staff generally speak English, and prices can sometimes be negotiated.

  • Hiking: The park features an extensive network of marked hiking trails, ranging from easy walks around Crno Jezero (Black Lake) to demanding ascents of Bobotov Kuk and other high peaks.
