Why visit?

Pljevlja is a municipality in northern Montenegro, bordering Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia, set in a landscape of forested mountains, river gorges, and highland plateaus. The town of Pljevlja, the municipal seat, is one of Montenegro's larger inland settlements and sits at an elevation of around 770 metres in the valley of the Ćehotina River. The municipality has historically been an important centre for coal mining and energy production, which has shaped its economy and character more than tourism ever has.

Beyond the industrial base, Pljevlja's surroundings hold genuine natural beauty. The Tara River Canyon — one of Europe's deepest gorges and a UNESCO World Heritage Site (as part of the Durmitor National Park) — cuts through the western edge of the municipality at Đurđevića Tara, where a famous concrete arch bridge spans the canyon. Dense coniferous and beech forests cover the surrounding hills, and the area is home to diverse wildlife including bears, wolves, and chamois.

Pljevlja also has layers of history: Ottoman mosques and hammams sit alongside medieval Orthodox monasteries, reflecting centuries of shifting empires and faiths. For travellers willing to venture beyond Montenegro's coast and national parks, the municipality offers a less-visited, more industrial-but-authentic side of the country with access to one of the Balkans' most spectacular natural landmarks.

When is the best time to visit?

Late spring (May–June) and early autumn (September–October) are ideal for visiting Pljevlja, with mild temperatures and green landscapes. Summer (July–August) brings warm days suitable for exploring the Tara Canyon and surrounding forests, though temperatures are cooler here than on the coast due to elevation.

Winters are cold and snowy, with temperatures frequently dropping well below zero — this can be beautiful for those who enjoy winter landscapes but limits access to some roads and outdoor activities. The municipality's Orthodox Christian community celebrates Christmas (January 7) and Easter with traditional observances, while the Muslim community marks Ramadan and Eid. These religious holidays offer cultural colour for visitors coinciding with them.

How do you get around?

Pljevlja is connected to Podgorica (approximately 170 km south) and other Montenegrin towns by regional roads and intercity bus services. The journey from Podgorica takes around 3.5–4 hours by road through mountainous terrain. There is no railway station in the municipality.

Within the municipality, a car is strongly recommended. The town of Pljevlja is walkable, but reaching the Tara Canyon at Đurđevića Tara (roughly 30 km west of the town centre) and other outlying areas requires private transport. Local bus services exist but are infrequent and primarily serve commuters rather than tourists. Taxis are available in town for shorter trips.

Where should you go?

  • Pljevlja — the municipal seat, a working town with Ottoman-era heritage, medieval monasteries, and the administrative hub for the surrounding region.
  • Durdevica Tara — the iconic concrete arch bridge spanning the Tara River Canyon, one of the most photographed landmarks in the Balkans and a gateway to the canyon's hiking and rafting opportunities.

What should you eat?

Plavljanska cuisine follows northern Montenegrin and broader Balkan traditions, with hearty, meat-heavy dishes suited to the cold highland climate. Grilled meats — ćevapi, pljeskavica, and ražnjići (skewers) — are standard fare, often accompanied by kajmak and fresh bread. Lamb and veal slow-cooked under a sač is a speciality for gatherings and celebrations.

Njeguški steak (stuffed with pršut and cheese) and various stews using seasonal vegetables are common in local restaurants. Bean soup (pasulj) and sarma (stuffed cabbage rolls) are comfort-food staples. Locally produced honey and dairy products are worth seeking out. Dining options are centred on the town, with several traditional restaurants (kafanas) offering generous portions at affordable prices.

What is the culture like?

Pljevlja's cultural landscape is defined by its religious diversity. The municipality is home to significant Ottoman-era heritage, including the Husein-Pasha's Mosque (Husein-pašina džamija), one of the largest and most beautiful mosques in Montenegro, and a historic hammam (Turkish bath). On the Orthodox side, the Holy Trinity Monastery (Manastir Svete Trojice), dating to the 16th century, is an important spiritual and architectural landmark.

Traditional folk music, both Bosniak sevdalinka and Serbian/Montenegrin epic poetry sung to the gusle, is part of the local cultural fabric. Handicrafts such as woodworking and wool-spinning have historical roots in the area, though they are less widely practised today.
