Mojkovac is a small municipality in northern Montenegro, situated at the confluence of the Tara and Bjelojevićka rivers in a valley between the Sinjajevina and Bjelasica mountain ranges. The town of Mojkovac, with a population of around 4,000, serves as the municipal centre and a gateway to the Tara River Canyon — the deepest canyon in Europe and a UNESCO-protected landscape within Durmitor National Park.
The municipality is defined by its mountainous terrain and river valleys. The Tara River Canyon, which stretches along the municipality's western and northern edges, reaches depths of over 1,300 metres and is one of Montenegro's most dramatic natural landmarks. Dense coniferous forests cover the surrounding slopes, and the highland pastures of Sinjajevina — Montenegro's largest mountain plateau — extend to the south and west.
Mojkovac has a long history as a transit point in the Montenegrin highlands. The Belgrade–Bar railway passes through the town, and the road connecting Podgorica to the north runs through the municipality via the Platije Canyon. While Mojkovac itself is modest in size and tourist infrastructure, its position between Durmitor National Park, Biogradska Gora National Park, and the Tara Canyon makes it a practical base for exploring some of Montenegro's most celebrated natural landscapes.
When is the best time to visit?
The best time to visit Mojkovac is from late May through September. Summer months (June–August) offer warm daytime temperatures, long daylight hours, and the best conditions for rafting on the Tara River and hiking in the surrounding mountains. The Tara River is at its most powerful in late spring (May–June) when snowmelt swells the flow, making it the peak season for whitewater rafting.
Autumn (September–October) brings cooler temperatures and vibrant foliage, with quieter trails and roads. Winter (November–March) brings heavy snowfall to the municipality, and temperatures can drop well below freezing. While winter limits access to high-altitude trails, it creates opportunities for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing in the surrounding highlands. The municipality's weather is highly variable due to the mountainous terrain, and conditions can change rapidly at altitude.

WhatsAppHow do you get around?
Mojkovac is a small town, and the centre is easily navigable on foot. The municipality is connected by road and rail to the wider Montenegrin transport network. The Belgrade–Bar railway stops in Mojkovac, providing connections north toward Bijelo Polje and Serbia, and south toward Kolašin and Podgorica. The journey from Mojkovac to Podgorica by train takes approximately two hours.
By road, Mojkovac is connected to Kolašin (roughly 30 km south) via the M-2 highway, and to Bijelo Polje (roughly 30 km north). Podgorica is approximately 100 km to the south, a drive of about 2 hours through mountainous terrain. Local buses connect Mojkovac to Kolašin and other northern towns, though services can be infrequent. For reaching the Tara River Canyon, Durmitor National Park, and remote mountain trailheads, a private vehicle is strongly recommended. Taxis are available in town but should be arranged in advance for longer excursions.

WhatsAppWhat should you eat?
Mojkovac's cuisine is rooted in the hearty mountain traditions of northern Montenegro. Grilled meats, slow-cooked stews, and dairy products feature prominently. Kačamak — a filling dish of cornmeal, potatoes, and kajmak (creamy dairy spread) — is a regional staple. Locally produced cheeses, cured meats, and honey from the surrounding highlands are available at small markets and family-run establishments.
Dining options in Mojkovac are modest, with a handful of local restaurants and bakeries serving traditional Montenegrin fare. Fresh trout from the Tara and its tributaries is a highlight when available. Visitors should not expect a wide range of international cuisine but can rely on honest, locally sourced mountain food at very reasonable prices.
What is the culture like?
Mojkovac's cultural life is closely tied to its mountain setting and the traditions of northern Montenegro. The municipality does not host major international festivals, but local events celebrate the area's natural heritage and community life. Traditional music, folk customs, and seasonal celebrations tied to pastoral life — including katun migrations to high-altitude summer pastures — remain part of the cultural fabric.
The municipality is historically significant for the Battle of Mojkovac (January 1916), a First World War engagement in which Montenegrin forces fought against Austro-Hungarian troops. This event is commemorated locally and forms part of the town's identity. The surrounding region preserves traditions of woodcraft, wool-working, and mountain pastoralism.
