Orhei is a district in central Moldova, famous for the Orhei Vechi (Old Orhei) cave monastery complex, one of the country's most important cultural and tourist attractions. The district center, the town of Orhei, lies roughly 50 km north of Chișinău on the Răut River. As one of Moldova's 37 administrative divisions, it embodies the rural, agricultural heart of the country — a landscape of rolling hills, sunflower fields, vineyards, and traditional villages where daily life moves at the pace of the seasons.
The district center, Orhei, serves as the main hub for services and transport, while the surrounding countryside offers visitors a glimpse of authentic Moldovan village life. The area sees very few international tourists, making it an appealing destination for those seeking uncrowded landscapes, genuine hospitality, and a slower travel experience.
When to Visit
The best months to visit are spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October). Summers (July–August) can be hot across the open landscape, often exceeding 30°C, while winters are cold and grey with occasional snowfall. Spring brings blooming orchards and green fields, while autumn offers the grape harvest and the warm golds and browns of the vine leaves.

WhatsAppGetting Around
The district is best explored by car or taxi, ideally rented in Chișinău for flexibility. Public transport consists of buses and marshrutka minibuses connecting the main town to the capital, with less frequent services to smaller villages. Roads within the district are mostly paved but can be poorly lit; rural lanes are often unpaved. Distances are modest — most settlements lie within 30–40 km of the district center.

Orhei benefits from its position as Moldova's prime tourist destination outside the capital. Restaurants near Orhei Vechi specialize in traditional Moldovan cuisine with a focus on grilled meats, mămăligă, and local wines. The town of Orhei has several good eateries catering to visitors.
Culture & Festivals
Orhei Vechi is Moldova's most significant historical and archaeological site — a complex of cave monasteries, fortifications, and bath houses carved into a dramatic limestone cliff above a bend in the Răut River. The site dates back to the Geto-Dacian period and was later used by Orthodox monks. The district also has several other monasteries and the Orhei Muzeul de Istorie și Etnografie.
