Bălți

Bălți is Moldova's second-largest city and the unofficial capital of the north, a compact municipality on the Răut River in the rolling Bălți Steppe roughly 130 km north of Chișinău. Nicknamed the 'northern capital', it combines Tsarist-era churches, interwar Romanian civic architecture, and broad Soviet-planned avenues. As one of Moldova's 37 administrative divisions, it embodies the rural, agricultural heart of the country — a landscape of rolling hills, sunflower fields, vineyards, and traditional villages where daily life moves at the pace of the seasons.

The district center, Bălți, serves as the main hub for services and transport, while the surrounding countryside offers visitors a glimpse of authentic Moldovan village life. The area sees very few international tourists, making it an appealing destination for those seeking uncrowded landscapes, genuine hospitality, and a slower travel experience.

The best months to visit are late spring through early autumn (May–September). Summers (July–August) can be hot across the open landscape, often exceeding 30°C, while winters are cold and grey with occasional snowfall. Spring brings blooming orchards and green fields, while autumn offers the grape harvest and the warm golds and browns of the vine leaves.

The district is best explored by car or taxi, ideally rented in Chișinău for flexibility. Public transport consists of buses and marshrutka minibuses connecting the main town to the capital, with less frequent services to smaller villages. Roads within the district are mostly paved but can be poorly lit; rural lanes are often unpaved. Distances are modest — most settlements lie within 30–40 km of the district center.

Bălți has a range of Moldovan restaurants, particularly around Independence Square and the main pedestrian streets. Look for mămăligă, sarmale, and grilled meats. The central market (Piața Centrală) is excellent for fresh produce, local cheeses, and cured meats.

Bălți hosts an annual City Day in the warmer months with concerts and fairs. The city has a municipal theatre, several museums including the Bălți Museum of History and Ethnography, and the grand St. Nicholas Cathedral and St. Constantine and Helena Church — two of Moldova's most important Orthodox landmarks.
