Nouakchott Ouest

Nouakchott Ouest is one of the three administrative regions that divide Mauritania's capital city Nouakchott. It covers the western districts of the city, including the expatriate and diplomatic quarter, the government district, and the prestigious coastal neighbourhoods. The region contains the Presidential Palace, most foreign embassies, and the upscale shopping and hotel areas. While landlocked from a tourism perspective (Nouakchott Ouest is essentially an administrative district), it contains the city's best hotels, restaurants, and the Sebkha (salt flat) that separates the city from the Atlantic.

November to February is the best time — mild temperatures, low humidity, and no dust storms.

The city is navigable by taxi (MRU 200–500 per ride within the district), ride-hailing via Classride, and occasional minibuses.

• Nouakchott — The capital city, with its markets, the National Museum, and the Port de Pêche.

Nouakchott Ouest has the widest range of international cuisine in Mauritania: Lebanese, French, Italian, Chinese, and Indian restaurants, alongside Mauritanian and Senegalese eateries.

As the diplomatic quarter, Nouakchott Ouest hosts the city's most formal cultural events including embassy-organised festivals and exhibitions. The National Museum is located in this district.

• Port de Pêche — Witness the spectacular arrival of thousands of pirogues at dawn carrying the day's catch.
• Shopping on Avenue Gamal Abdel Nasser — The main commercial avenue with shops, banks, and restaurants.
