Barkewol (also known as Aftout, part of Aftout Department) is a small settlement in central Assaba, in Mauritania's Sahelian belt. The wider department recorded a population of about 80,000 at the 2000 census, with the town itself much smaller. The area sits amid bushland and pastoral grazing country typical of the Assaba interior.
