Rongelap
Ralik chain, Marshall Islands
Why visit Rongelap?
Rongelap Atoll is a large coral atoll in the northern Ralik Chain of the Marshall Islands, located approximately 200 km east of Bikini Atoll and about 300 km northwest of Majuro. The atoll comprises roughly 61 islands encircling a lagoon of about 1,030 km², making it one of the larger atolls in the Marshalls by lagoon area. The total land area is approximately 16 km².
Rongelap is infamous for its role in the US nuclear testing programme. On 1 March 1954, the Castle Bravo hydrogen bomb test on Bikini Atoll deposited significant radioactive fallout on Rongelap, contaminating the atoll and its residents. The 67 Marshallese inhabitants of Rongelap were evacuated three days after the test but suffered serious health effects from radiation exposure. The atoll was eventually resettled in the 1970s but re-evacuated in 1985 due to ongoing contamination concerns. Today, Rongelap remains largely uninhabited, though there have been efforts toward resettlement and cleanup. The Rongelap Atoll Local Government (RALG) administers the atoll from exile in Majuro, and visits are tightly controlled.
The climate is tropical maritime with temperatures averaging 27–30°C. The northern location makes it somewhat drier than the southern atolls. The dry season (December–April) offers the best conditions for travel. The wet season (May–November) brings heavier rainfall. The atoll is extremely low-lying.

What are the things to do?
Castle Bravo Fallout Zone — The atoll was heavily contaminated by the 1954 Castle Bravo test. The environmental and human impact is the central historical narrative of the atoll.
Rongelap Island — The former main settlement, now largely abandoned. The decaying buildings, church, and infrastructure tell a powerful story of displacement.
Reef and Lagoon — The atoll's marine environment has recovered significantly. The reefs are in excellent condition with abundant marine life.
Memorial Sites — Memorials to the affected community and their ongoing struggle for justice and resettlement.
Historical Visits — Guided tours of the atoll, arranged through RALG, focus on the nuclear history and its impact on the Marshallese people.
Snorkelling and Diving — The reefs are healthy and largely untouched. Visibility is excellent. Permitted as part of organised expeditions.
Fishing — The lagoon and outer reef offer good fishing. Arrange through your expedition organiser.
Scientific and Educational Tours — Rongelap has been the subject of extensive scientific study. Research-oriented visits can be arranged through RALG.
Photography — The abandoned settlement and pristine natural environment create a unique and poignant photographic experience.
