Żebbuġ Gozo, officially known simply as Iż-Żebbuġ, is a picturesque local council located on a high plateau in the northern part of the island of Gozo, Malta. It is the highest village on the island, offering breathtaking, panoramic views of the Gozitan countryside and the northern Mediterranean coast. The name Żebbuġ translates to "olives" in Maltese, indicating the historic presence of olive groves in the region.
What defines Żebbuġ Gozo as a travel destination is its tranquil, traditional atmosphere, its stunning natural landscapes, and its spectacular coastal areas. The village core is centered around a beautiful parish church, while the surrounding cliffs slope down to the sea, leading to the popular coastal areas of Marsalforn and the historic salt pans of Qbajar. It is a perfect destination for travelers seeking scenic beauty, outdoor activities, and authentic Gozitan culture.
When to Visit
The best time to visit Żebbuġ Gozo is during the spring (April to June) and autumn (September to October) months. During these periods, the weather is ideal for hiking along the northern cliffs and exploring the village. Spring is particularly beautiful as the hillsides are lush and green.
The village celebrates its annual feast in honor of the Assumption of Our Lady on the first Sunday after August 15th. This summer festival features traditional street marches, band club performances, religious processions, and colorful fireworks, bringing the quiet hilltop village to life.
