Overview

Xagħra is one of the most historic and picturesque local councils on the island of Gozo, Malta. Perched on a high plateau in the northeastern part of the island, it offers sweeping views over the fertile Marsalforn and Ramla valleys. The town is characterized by its spacious central square, dominated by the majestic parish church, and its quiet, winding streets lined with traditional limestone houses.

What defines Xagħra as a premier travel destination is its extraordinary archaeological and natural heritage. It is home to the world-famous Ġgantija Temples, which predate the Egyptian pyramids, making it a cornerstone of Mediterranean prehistory. Beyond its ancient stones, Xagħra boasts fascinating underground caves, a rich agricultural tradition, and close proximity to Gozo's finest red-sand beach, Ramla Bay, making it an essential stop for history enthusiasts and nature lovers alike.

When to Visit

The best months to visit Xagħra are from April to June and September to October. During these shoulder seasons, the weather is warm and sunny but avoids the intense heat of mid-summer, making it ideal for exploring outdoor archaeological sites and hiking through the surrounding valleys. Spring is particularly beautiful as the Gozitan countryside is lush and covered in wildflowers.

In September, the town comes alive for the Feast of the Nativity of Our Lady (locally known as Il-Bambina), celebrated on September 8th. This grand event features elaborate street decorations, brass band marches, traditional food stalls, and spectacular fireworks. Visitors during this time will experience Gozo's vibrant community spirit at its peak.

Getting Around

Navigating Xagħra and reaching it from other parts of Gozo is straightforward. Public buses operated by Malta Public Transport connect Xagħra to the island's capital, Victoria (Rabat), and the Mgarr Ferry Terminal. Bus route 307 runs regularly between Victoria and Xagħra, while route 322 connects the village directly to Mgarr and Marsalforn.

Within the village core, the most practical way to get around is on foot, as the main attractions, restaurants, and cafes are clustered around the central Victory Square. For exploring the surrounding countryside, Ramla Bay, or nearby coastal areas, renting a bicycle, e-bike, or car is highly recommended due to the hilly terrain. Taxis and ride-sharing services are also readily available across the island.

Cuisine

Xagħra offers an authentic taste of Gozitan cuisine, which relies heavily on fresh, locally sourced ingredients. Signature dishes include ġbejniet (traditional sheep's milk cheeselets, served fresh, dried, or peppered), ftira Għawdxija (a local style of pizza-like flatbread topped with potatoes, capers, olives, tuna, or anchovies), and slow-cooked rabbit (fenek).

The restaurants surrounding Victory Square are excellent spots to try these specialties alongside local olive oil, sun-dried tomatoes, and capers. Pair your meal with a glass of robust Gozitan wine, produced from grapes grown in the sun-drenched soil of the surrounding valleys. For dessert, do not miss imqaret (date-filled pastries) or honey rings (qagħaq tal-għasel).

Culture & Festivals

Xagħra possesses a deep-rooted cultural heritage centered around religious traditions, folklore, and historical preservation. The most prominent event is the Feast of Our Lady of Victories (Il-Bambina), held annually on September 8th, which commemorates the birth of the Virgin Mary and honors the town's patron saint. The celebration is marked by solemn religious processions, lively street marches by local wind bands, and a competitive display of fireworks.

Additionally, Xagħra is known for its Christmas traditions, particularly the display of highly detailed, hand-crafted nativity scenes (presepji) in private homes and public spaces. The village also boasts the Ta' Kola Windmill, one of the few surviving windmills on the islands dating back to the eighteenth century, which serves as a museum of rural life and traditional milling crafts.
