Overview

Valletta, known colloquially as Il-Belt ("The City") in Maltese, is the capital city of Malta. Established in 1566 by the Order of Saint John following the Great Siege of 1565, the city was named after its founder, Grand Master Jean Parisot de Valette. Valletta is a masterpiece of Baroque architecture and was designed as a fortified peninsula town between two deep natural harbors: Marsamxett Harbour and the Grand Harbour. It was one of the first sites in the world to be inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Valletta is characterized by its grid-like street layout, steep hilly streets, imposing limestone bastions, and ornate wooden balconies (gallariji) projecting from historic buildings. Despite its small residential population, Valletta is the administrative, cultural, and historic heart of Malta, packed with museums, grand palaces, and majestic churches. In 2018, it served as the European Capital of Culture, cementing its status as a premier global cultural destination.

When to Visit

Valletta is an excellent year-round destination, but the most pleasant months to visit are from April to June and September to November, when the weather is warm and sunny, ideal for walking the city's hilly streets. July and August are hot and busy, while the winter months of December to February are mild but can be rainy. Major cultural events, such as the Valletta Baroque Festival in January and the Malta Jazz Festival in July, are also key times to visit.

Getting Around

Valletta is a compact peninsula and is best explored entirely on foot, which allows visitors to climb the scenic street stairs and take pedestrian shortcuts. The city's main street, Republic Street, is flat and pedestrianized. Valletta's main bus terminal, located just outside the City Gate, is the central hub for the entire island's bus network. Ferries operate regularly across the harbors to Sliema and the Three Cities, and the Barrakka Lift connects the Grand Harbour waterfront to the Upper Barrakka Gardens.
