Why visit?

Saint Lucia's (Maltese: Santa Luċija) is a small, modern, and planned residential locality situated in the Southern Harbour District of Malta. Developed in the mid-20th century, it was named after a nearby 16th-century chapel dedicated to Saint Lucy. Unlike many of Malta's older, densely built towns, Santa Luċija was designed with a focus on green spaces, wide streets, and public gardens, giving it a peaceful, suburban character.

The locality is notable for hosting the Chinese Garden of Serenity, a unique public park designed as a traditional Chinese garden, which serves as a major peaceful retreat for visitors from across the island. The area is primarily residential, offering a quiet and clean environment close to the historic Three Cities and the capital, Valletta.

When is the best time to visit?

Santa Luċija is a year-round destination, but the best times to visit are during the spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) when the weather is ideal for strolls in the public gardens. The Chinese Garden of Serenity is particularly beautiful in spring when flowers are in bloom. The local town feast in December is also a unique winter cultural highlight.

What should you eat?

Being a quiet residential area, Santa Luċija has a limited number of dining establishments, but visitors can find local cafes and snack bars serving traditional Maltese treats. Classic items include pastizzi (flaky pastries filled with ricotta or peas), qassatat (small pies), and Maltese bread (ħobż tal-Malti) served with olive oil, tomatoes, and capers. For a wider selection of fine dining, visitors typically head to the nearby Valletta Waterfront or the Three Cities.

What is the culture like?

The local feast of Saint Lucy is celebrated annually around the 13th of December, which is unique as it occurs during the winter season. The celebration includes religious services in the parish church, street decorations, and community gatherings. The Chinese Garden of Serenity also occasionally hosts cultural events and festivals celebrating Chinese-Maltese friendship and heritage.
