Rabat Malta is a historic and culturally rich town located in the western part of Malta, immediately adjacent to the ancient fortified capital of Mdina. The town's name is derived from the Arabic word for "suburb," as it historically developed outside the walls of Mdina. Today, Rabat is a major pilgrimage and tourist destination, celebrated for its extraordinary archaeological sites, religious monuments, and charming, undisturbed streetscapes.
Unlike the silent, noble atmosphere of Mdina, Rabat is a living, breathing community that has retained a strong sense of tradition. Its streets are lined with limestone townhouses adorned with colorful wooden balconies and shrines. The town is built over a vast network of ancient Roman and Byzantine tombs, making it one of the most important archaeological landscapes in the Mediterranean.
When is the best time to visit?
Rabat is wonderful to visit year-round, but spring (March to May) is particularly beautiful as the surrounding valleys and countryside are green and perfect for hiking. The town is highly festive during the feast of Saint Paul in early July and the feast of Saint Joseph in March. Visiting during Easter is also highly recommended, as the town hosts solemn and traditional processions.
