Qormi, also known by its historical title Città Pinto, is one of the largest and oldest cities in Malta, situated in the central region of the island. Historically, the city grew rapidly due to its fertile agricultural lands and its central position, which made it a hub for trade and craftsmanship. Qormi is widely celebrated as the capital of Maltese bread-making, a tradition that dates back centuries and remains a vital part of the city's identity today.
The city features a fascinating contrast between its bustling modern commercial areas and its quiet, labyrinthine old quarters. Walking through the narrow streets of the historic center reveals beautiful stone arches, traditional Maltese balconies, and grand baroque residences, reflecting the wealth and influence Qormi enjoyed during the rule of the Knights of St. John.
When to Visit
The spring season is a spectacular time to visit Qormi, particularly during Holy Week. The city is famous for its elaborate Good Friday processions and Easter Sunday celebrations, which are among the most passionate on the island. Autumn is also an excellent time, especially during the annual Qormi Bread Festival, which showcases the city's rich baking heritage.
