Pietà is a picturesque coastal local council situated along the scenic Marsamxett Harbour, just outside Malta's capital city, Valletta. It serves as a vital gateway to the capital and is characterized by its bustling waterfront, historic villas, and deep-rooted maritime heritage. The town's name is derived from the Italian word for "pity" or "mercy," reflecting its historical association with the chapel of Our Lady of Sorrows.
Historically, Pietà developed as a residential and maritime suburb. Today, it offers a blend of peaceful waterfront walks along Pietà Creek and architectural treasures tucked away in its winding streets. It is perhaps most famous internationally as the home of Villa Guardamangia, the stately mid-18th-century villa that served as the residence of Princess Elizabeth (later Queen Elizabeth II) and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, during their early married years.
When to Visit
The best time to visit Pietà is during the spring (April to June) and autumn (September to October) when the Mediterranean climate is mild and comfortable for outdoor exploration. Summers (July and August) can be hot and humid, though the harbor breezes provide some relief. The town comes alive with religious devotion and festive decorations during the feast of Our Lady of Sorrows, celebrated on the Friday before Good Friday, and the parish feast of Our Lady of Fatima in October.

Traveling on foot is highly feasible within the council itself, and a walk from Pietà to Valletta or the neighboring marina town of Msida is scenic and straightforward. For a premium dining experience, visitors can enjoy Mediterranean fusion dishes at the restaurants lining the Pietà and Msida marinas.
Culture & Festivals
The cultural heart of Pietà is tied to its religious heritage. The most significant annual event is the feast of Our Lady of Fatima, celebrated in October with street decorations, brass band marches, and fireworks. The historical chapel of Our Lady of Sorrows also draws large crowds during the Easter period. Additionally, local conservation groups frequently organize cultural tours of the historic Villa Frere gardens, showcasing Maltese horticultural history.
