Why visit?

Pembroke is a coastal town located in the Northern Region of Malta, situated immediately north of the vibrant entertainment district of St. Julian's. It is one of the newest towns in Malta, having developed in the late 20th century from a former British military cantonment. The town is named after the 12th Earl of Pembroke, who was the British Secretary of State for War when the military base was established.

Pembroke has a unique architectural and environmental character. Many of the historic British barracks, officers' quarters, and military buildings have been preserved and converted into residential homes, schools, and government offices. The town is also home to the Pembroke Garigue Heritage Park, a large, protected coastal area that contains some of the most important karstland habitats in the Maltese Islands, hosting rare wild flowers and unique geological formations.

When is the best time to visit?

Pembroke is a great destination to visit throughout the year, but the spring months of March to May are particularly beautiful for outdoor activities. During this time, the Pembroke Garigue Heritage Park is in full bloom, with rare orchids and other wild flowers carpeting the rocky landscape. The autumn months are also excellent for coastal walks and enjoying the rocky beaches without the summer crowds.

What should you eat?

Pembroke is primarily a quiet residential and educational area, so dining options within the town itself are limited to a few local cafes and sports club restaurants. However, because it is located right next to St. Julian's and Paceville, visitors have immediate access to hundreds of restaurants. This nearby area offers everything from casual seaside dining and traditional Maltese eateries to high-end international restaurants and lively bars.

What is the culture like?

Unlike Malta's older, traditional villages, Pembroke does not have a historic parish feast (festa) in the traditional style. Instead, the town's community life revolves around sports, education, and outdoor activities. It is home to several major sports clubs, language schools, and environmental initiatives. The town's cultural heritage is represented by its British military architecture, including Fort Pembroke (now a school) and the Pembroke Battery, which was built to defend the island's coastline.
