Munxar

Munxar is a rural village and local council in southwest Gozo, Malta, situated 2.5 km south of the island capital, Victoria (Rabat). Positioned on a narrow globigerina limestone ridge elevated between the Xlendi Valley (Wied ix-Xlendi) and Kantra Valley (Wied tal-Kantra), the local council covers roughly 2.8 square kilometers and has a population of approximately 1,450 permanent residents. The municipality incorporates two distinct settlements: the hilltop agricultural village of Munxar inland and the coastal resort area of Xlendi Bay along the Mediterranean shoreline.

The inland village centers around traditional stone houses, terraced farmland, and parish activity, while Xlendi Bay features a deep fjord-like inlet framed by vertical cliff faces, seafood restaurants, and scuba diving centers. Historically an agricultural settlement dependent on wheat, dryland crops, and sheep farming, Munxar was recognized as an independent parish in 1957. Visitors use Munxar as a base for cliffside hiking along the southern coast of Gozo, swimming in coastal inlets, and exploring rural Gozitan architecture away from main tourist centers.

Munxar has a Mediterranean climate marked by hot, dry summers and mild, damp winters. Summer daytime temperatures from June to September average between 28 °C and 33 °C (82 °F to 91 °F) with minimal rainfall and strong UV exposure. Winter highs from December to February range from 12 °C to 16 °C (54 °F to 61 °F). Most of the annual 530 mm of precipitation falls during thunderstorms between October and March.

Spring (April to June) and autumn (September to October) offer the most comfortable conditions for walking coastal cliff trails and visiting Gozo. Spring temperatures range from 18 °C to 25 °C (64 °F to 77 °F), with wild mustard and clover blooming across the surrounding valley terraces. Autumn brings warm Mediterranean sea temperatures averaging 23 °C (73 °F) and daytime highs between 22 °C and 27 °C (72 °F to 81 °F).

The annual parish feast of Saint Paul (Festa ta' San Pawl) takes place during the final weekend of May. As the first village festival of the summer season on Gozo, the event features brass band marches, street decorations, local street food, and evening fireworks over the village center.

Summer (July to August) is hot and dry, with daily temperatures often exceeding 32 °C (90 °F). This period sees heavy tourist traffic at Xlendi Bay for swimming, snorkeling, and diving, though walking exposed cliff paths during mid-day heat requires adequate water and sun protection. Winter (November to March) brings cooler daytime temperatures of 12 °C to 16 °C (54 °F to 61 °F) and periodic rainfall, leading to quiet conditions in both Munxar village and Xlendi Bay.

Malta Public Transport operates regular daily bus services on Gozo.

• Route 306: Runs hourly from Victoria Central Bus Station (Bay 5) directly through Munxar village square to Xlendi Bay waterfront. The journey from Victoria to Munxar takes 8 to 10 minutes (2.5 km).
• Route 301: Connects Mġarr Ferry Terminal to Victoria Central Bus Station every 30 minutes (15 minutes journey time). Travelers arriving by ferry transfer at Victoria Bus Station to Route 306 for Munxar. Total bus transit time from Mġarr to Munxar is approximately 30 to 40 minutes.
• Fares: A single-journey cash bus ticket costs €2.00 ($2.15 USD) in winter and €2.50 ($2.70 USD) in summer. A rechargeable Tallinja Card reduces the single fare to €1.50 ($1.60 USD). By Train

No train service. There is no active railway network on the islands of Malta or Gozo.

Munxar is located 6.5 km west of Mġarr Ferry Terminal and 2.5 km south of Victoria.
