Overview

Munxar is a small, charming village located on the southern coast of Gozo, Malta's sister island. It is situated on a picturesque ridge nestled between the lush valleys of Xlendi and Kantra. Munxar has retained its quiet, rural character, making it a perfect destination for travelers seeking peace, natural beauty, and an authentic taste of Gozitan village life.

The village is closely associated with the nearby seaside resort of Xlendi, which falls under the same local administration. While Xlendi is bustling with tourists and restaurants, Munxar itself remains a tranquil residential community surrounded by terraced fields and dramatic cliffs. The village center is simple and welcoming, centered around a modern parish church built of local globigerina limestone.

When to Visit

The best time to visit Munxar is during the spring months of March to May, when the surrounding valleys are lush and green, and wild flowers are in bloom, making it perfect for hiking. The village parish feast, dedicated to Saint Paul, is celebrated in late May. This feast is particularly significant as it is the first of Gozo's summer festa season, bringing a lively energy to the village with street decorations, brass bands, and fireworks.

Getting Around

Munxar is connected to Gozo's capital, Victoria, by a regular bus service. The bus route also connects the village to Xlendi Bay. Because of the village's small size, it is very easy to get around on foot. Hiking is a popular way to explore the area, with scenic trails leading from the village center down through the valley to the sea. Renting a car or scooter is also a great option for exploring the rest of Gozo.

Cuisine

Munxar offers a small but authentic selection of dining options, including local cafes and a traditional band club. For a wider culinary experience, visitors can head down to the waterfront of nearby Xlendi, which is famous for its excellent seafood restaurants. Local Gozitan specialties to try include ftira Għawdxija (a traditional flatbread topped with sliced potatoes, local sheep's cheese, anchovies, and olives) and fresh sheep's cheeselets (ġbejniet), which are often served fresh, dried, or peppered.

Culture & Festivals

The cultural life of Munxar is centered around the Parish Church of St. Paul. The annual feast of St. Paul, celebrated in the last week of May, is a major community event. As the opening feast of the Gozitan summer, it is celebrated with great enthusiasm. The village streets are decorated with colorful banners and lights, and the local band club plays traditional marches. The event concludes with a display of aerial and ground fireworks.
