Overview

Mtarfa is a small, peaceful town located in the Northern Region of Malta. Situated on a high hill overlooking fertile valleys, it offers panoramic views of the surrounding countryside and the nearby medieval walled city of Mdina. Mtarfa has a distinct character that sets it apart from other traditional Maltese villages, largely due to its extensive British military heritage.

During the British colonial period, Mtarfa was developed as a key military outpost and cantonment. The British built barracks, officers' quarters, and a state-of-the-art military hospital (now a secondary school) here in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Today, Mtarfa is a quiet, green residential suburb that attracts visitors interested in military history, scenic walks, and a peaceful escape from the busier parts of the island.

When to Visit

Mtarfa is a pleasant place to visit year-round, but spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) are particularly beautiful. The weather during these months is ideal for hiking in the surrounding valleys and enjoying the panoramic views. A unique time to visit is in October, when the town often hosts the "Military Mtarfa" event, which celebrates the town's history with reenactments and exhibitions.

Getting Around

Mtarfa is accessible by bus, with routes connecting it to the nearby transport hub of Rabat, as well as to Valletta and other major towns. Because the town is small and mostly residential, it is very easy to explore on foot. For those wishing to travel between Mtarfa and neighboring Rabat or Mdina, the walk is scenic but involves a steep hill, so a short bus ride or taxi may be preferred.

Cuisine

Mtarfa is primarily a residential area, so its dining options are limited to a few local cafes, snack bars, and a band club. For a wider selection of dining experiences, visitors typically make the short trip to neighboring Rabat or Mdina. There, they can find everything from traditional Maltese restaurants serving rabbit stew and pastizzi to high-end fine dining establishments housed in historic palazzos.

Culture & Festivals

The cultural identity of Mtarfa is heavily influenced by its military past. The annual "Military Mtarfa" event is a major highlight, featuring historical reenactments of World War II and British colonial military life, displays of vintage military vehicles, and exhibitions of historical artifacts. The town also celebrates the religious feast of Saint Lucy in December, which is marked by a smaller, traditional community gathering and church services.
