Overview

Mqabba is a traditional, quiet village located in the southern region of Malta. It is a classic example of a Maltese agricultural community, characterized by its slow pace of life, narrow streets, and historic limestone architecture. The village is surrounded by several active and historic limestone quarries, which have played a significant role in the island's construction industry and the economy of the local community for generations.

Despite its modest size, Mqabba possesses a rich cultural heritage, with a historic core that has remained largely unchanged for decades. The village skyline is dominated by the elegant Parish Church of the Assumption, a beautiful Baroque structure that stands as a symbol of local pride. Mqabba is also home to several ancient chapels and historic properties that showcase the rural charm of southern Malta.

When to Visit

The absolute best time to visit Mqabba is during the summer months, particularly in June and August. The village is famous for its competitive and spectacular summer feasts. The feast of Our Lady of the Lilies (Madonna tal-Ġilju) is celebrated in mid-June, followed by the feast of the Assumption of Our Lady (Santa Marija) in mid-August. During these times, the village comes alive with color, music, and some of the most impressive fireworks on the island.

Cuisine

Dining options in Mqabba are traditional and community-focused. The heart of the local culinary scene is found in the village band clubs, such as the Saint Mary Band Club and the King George V Band Club. These clubs serve as social hubs where visitors can enjoy local beers, Maltese coffee, and classic snacks like pastizzi (savory pastries) and qassatat (pies). For a more formal meal, local restaurants serve traditional Maltese platters featuring ġbejniet (sheep's cheese), olives, sun-dried tomatoes, and fresh local bread.

Culture & Festivals

Mqabba is world-renowned for its pyrotechnics, and its local fireworks factories have won several prestigious international competitions. The village's two rival band clubs put on extraordinary, synchronized aerial firework displays during the summer feasts of June and August. These events are a massive part of local culture, with residents dedicating months of preparation to the decorations, street marches, and light shows. The village also boasts the ancient Chapel of St. Basil, one of the oldest surviving medieval chapels in Malta, dating back to the late 15th century.
