Mosta is a bustling, historic city located in the central region of Malta. As one of the largest and most populous localities on the island, it serves as a key commercial and transit hub. Despite its modern development and busy shopping streets, Mosta has successfully preserved its traditional Maltese character, particularly within its historic core, which is filled with narrow winding alleys and traditional limestone houses.
The city is internationally renowned for the Rotunda of Mosta, officially known as the Basilica of the Assumption of Our Lady. Built in the 19th century, this monumental neoclassical church boasts one of the largest unsupported domes in the world. The dome is a masterpiece of architectural engineering, designed by the local architect Giorgio Grognet de Vassé and constructed entirely by the townspeople.
When to Visit
Mosta is a year-round destination, but the most exciting time to visit is during the summer. The peak of the city's cultural calendar is the feast of the Assumption of Our Lady, celebrated on August 15th. This is one of the grandest festas in Malta, featuring streets decorated with colorful banners, elaborate statues, brass band marches, and spectacular firework displays. The spring months of April to June are also ideal for exploring the surrounding countryside and the historic Victoria Lines.

WhatsAppGetting Around
Due to its central location, Mosta is exceptionally well-connected by Malta's public bus network, with numerous routes passing through Mosta Square from Valletta, Bugibba, Sliema, and Rabat. Parking in the city center can be challenging, so public transport or ride-hailing services are often the most convenient options. Within the historic center, all major sights, shops, and restaurants are easily accessible on foot.

WhatsAppCuisine
Mosta offers a diverse culinary scene, ranging from traditional Maltese bakeries to modern Mediterranean restaurants. Around the main square, visitors can find numerous pastizzerijas serving freshly baked pastizzi (flaky pastries filled with ricotta or mushy peas). Traditional Maltese bread (ħobż tal-Malti), crusty on the outside and soft on the inside, is a local staple. The city also features several excellent restaurants housed in converted traditional houses, serving classic dishes such as rabbit stew and stuffed beef olives.
Culture & Festivals
The cultural life of Mosta is deeply intertwined with its religious traditions and historical events. The annual parish feast on August 15th is a major highlight, drawing visitors from across the island. Another significant historical event commemorated in Mosta is the "Miracle of the Bomb." During a World War II air raid in 1942, a German aerial bomb pierced the dome of the Rotunda and fell into the church during a service, but failed to explode, sparing the lives of hundreds of parishioners. A replica of the bomb is displayed in the church vestry.
