Mġarr is a picturesque, rural village situated in the northwestern part of Malta. Unlike the highly urbanized harbor regions, Mġarr remains a bastion of traditional Maltese country life, characterized by its fertile valleys, terraced agricultural fields, and rugged coastline. The village is surrounded by some of the most fertile soil on the island, making it a key agricultural hub famous for its vineyards, olive groves, and strawberry fields.
The area is also steeped in ancient history. Mġarr is home to two of the oldest free-standing stone structures in the world, the megalithic temples of Ta' Ħaġrat and Skorba. These UNESCO World Heritage Sites offer a fascinating glimpse into Malta's prehistoric temple-building phase. The village itself is dominated by the monumental Parish Church, which features a distinctive oval dome that rises high above the surrounding countryside.
When to Visit
The best time to visit Mġarr is during the spring, specifically in April, when the village hosts its famous annual Strawberry Festival (Festa Frawli). This lively event celebrates the local harvest and attracts visitors from all over the island to sample fresh strawberries, strawberry-themed desserts, and traditional pastries. The autumn months of September to November are also excellent, offering cooler temperatures that are ideal for hiking along the scenic cliffs of Fomm ir-Riħ or exploring the archaeological sites.

WhatsAppGetting Around
Mġarr is connected to Malta's public bus network, with regular routes running from Valletta, Sliema, and the nearby city of Mosta. While buses are reliable, renting a car or using ride-hailing services is highly recommended if you wish to explore the more remote areas, such as the secluded bay of Fomm ir-Riħ. Within the village core, the narrow streets are best explored on foot, while the surrounding countryside offers excellent, albeit rugged, walking trails.

WhatsAppCuisine
Mġarr is widely celebrated as the culinary capital of traditional Maltese cuisine, particularly for its rabbit dishes. The village is filled with local eateries, known as barrakki, that specialize in stuffat tal-fenek (rabbit stew slow-cooked with garlic, wine, and bay leaves) and fenek moqli (rabbit fried in garlic). Another local specialty is bramli (snail dishes) and fresh local vegetables. The village's fertile lands also produce excellent local wines and olive oils, which are featured prominently in every meal.
Culture & Festivals
Aside from the incredibly popular Strawberry Festival in April, Mġarr's cultural life revolves around its religious heritage. The parish feast dedicated to the Assumption of Our Lady is celebrated on the first Sunday after August 15th. This feast is famous for a unique local tradition where the privilege of carrying the statue of the Virgin Mary in the procession is auctioned off to the highest bidder, with the proceeds donated to parish charities. The event features brass band marches, street decorations, and elaborate firework displays.
