Luqa is a bustling town located in the Southern Region of Malta, best known as the home of Malta International Airport. Despite its association with modern travel and transport, Luqa has a long history and a traditional town center that stands in contrast to the busy airport perimeter. The town's name is believed to be derived from the Maltese word for poplar trees (luqa), which once grew in abundance in the area.
Luqa became an independent parish in the 17th century and grew rapidly due to its agricultural and strategic location. During World War II, the town suffered heavy damage due to its airfield, but it was subsequently rebuilt. Today, Luqa is a dynamic community that balances its role as Malta's primary gateway with its identity as a traditional Maltese town.
When is the best time to visit?
Luqa is visited year-round by travelers arriving in Malta. For those wishing to experience the town's local culture, the best time to visit is during the first week of July, when the town celebrates the feast of its patron saint, St. Andrew. The feast is celebrated with vibrant street decorations, marching bands, and impressive fireworks.
