Lija is a small, picturesque village located in the Central Region of Malta. Together with Attard and Balzan, it forms part of the "Three Villages," a prestigious residential area known for its historic villas, grand gardens, and quiet, affluent character. Lija is particularly famous for its beautiful citrus orchards, narrow winding streets, and stunning baroque architecture.
The village has a rich history dating back to the Renaissance and Baroque periods, when many wealthy Maltese families and knights built their country residences here. Today, Lija is celebrated for its elegant townhouses, historic chapels, and the iconic Belvedere Tower, which stands as a landmark of the locality.
When to Visit
Lija is beautiful throughout the year, but spring is especially delightful when the orange and lemon groves are in blossom, filling the air with a sweet citrus scent. The absolute highlight of the year is the village feast of Our Saviour, celebrated on August 6th. This feast is widely regarded as one of the best in Malta, famous for its spectacular and innovative aerial firework displays.
