Overview

Kirkop is a small, historic village located in the Southern Region of Malta. It lies close to Malta International Airport, surrounded by the neighboring towns of Luqa, Mqabba, and Safi. Despite its proximity to modern infrastructure, Kirkop has successfully preserved its traditional Maltese village core, characterized by narrow winding streets, historic stone houses, and quiet niches.

The village has ancient origins, with evidence of human occupation dating back to the Phoenician and Roman eras. Its name is believed to derive from a local family surname (Procopio), which over time became Maltese as Kirkop. The village's coat of arms features a red cross, symbolizing its long-standing Christian heritage and community spirit.

When to Visit

Kirkop is a pleasant year-round destination, but the spring and autumn months offer the most comfortable weather for exploring the historic village core. The village comes alive during its two main religious feasts: the feast of St. Leonard, celebrated on the first Sunday of September, and the feast of Saint Joseph, celebrated in the summer. These festivals feature brass band marches, street decorations, and traditional fireworks.
