Overview

Kalkara is a picturesque coastal local council located in the South Eastern Region of Malta, situated on the eastern side of the Grand Harbour. The area has a rich maritime history and is characterized by its scenic waterfront, traditional Maltese townhouses, and historical fortifications. It surrounds the scenic Kalkara Creek and offers stunning views across the water to the fortified cities of Vittoriosa (Birgu) and Valletta.

Historically, Kalkara developed as a small fishing community around a sheltered creek. Today, it retains a quiet, residential, and authentic Maltese atmosphere, largely untouched by mass tourism. The locality's identity is deeply tied to its maritime heritage, boat-building traditions, and its proximity to major historical sites like Fort Ricasoli and the Esplora Interactive Science Centre.

When to Visit

The best time to visit Kalkara is during the spring (April to June) and autumn (September to October) when the weather is warm and pleasant, ideal for walking along the harbor and exploring the area. Summer (July and August) is hot and busy, but offers the best conditions for swimming. The local parish feast, dedicated to St. Joseph, is celebrated with great enthusiasm in the second week of July, featuring street decorations, brass band marches, and spectacular fireworks.
