Overview

Isla, also widely known by its historical title Senglea, is a highly fortified city and local council located in the Grand Harbour of Malta. It is one of the famous "Three Cities" (along with Birgu and Bormla) and occupies a narrow, rocky peninsula that juts out into the harbor opposite Valletta. Founded by Grand Master Claude de la Sengle in the 1550s, the city played a heroic role in the Great Siege of Malta in 1565, earning the title Civitas Invicta (The Unconquered City) from the Order of Saint John.

Isla is a masterpiece of military architecture, packed with historic limestone buildings, steep stepped streets, and massive defensive bastions. Despite suffering severe damage during World War II, the city has been beautifully restored and retains an intense, authentic maritime character. For travelers, Isla offers spectacular harbor views, deep historical significance, and a vibrant waterfront dining scene.

When to Visit

Isla is a fantastic destination year-round. The shoulder seasons of April to June and September to October offer the best weather for exploring the steep, hilly streets on foot. Visiting on September 8 is a highly memorable experience, as the city celebrates its national feast, which coincides with Victory Day and the historic Regatta boat races held in the Grand Harbour.

Getting Around

Isla is easily accessible from Valletta. The most scenic way to arrive is by taking the traditional water taxi (dghajsa) or the Valletta-Three Cities ferry from the Valletta waterfront across the Grand Harbour. Regular bus services also connect Isla to Valletta and the surrounding towns. Inside the city, the streets are very narrow, steep, and mostly pedestrianized, making walking the only practical way to explore.

Cuisine

Isla's culinary scene is heavily influenced by its maritime location. The Senglea Waterfront (Dix-Neuf Cantons) is lined with restaurants serving fresh seafood, traditional Maltese fish soup (aljotta), and Mediterranean dishes, all while offering views of the yachts in the marina. In the town's interior, small local bars and pastizzerias offer traditional Maltese snacks, rabbit, and local wines in a traditional setting.

Culture & Festivals

Isla possesses a rich cultural identity. The city's main festival is the Feast of Our Lady of Victories (Maria Bambina), celebrated on September 8. This major national holiday commemorates the end of the Great Siege of 1565 and the end of World War II. The harbor front becomes the stage for the traditional Regatta boat races, where crews from the harbor towns compete in traditional wooden boats. The city is also famous for its devotion to the miraculous statue of Jesus the Redeemer (Ir-Redentur), housed in the basilica.
