Iklin is a modern and affluent local council located in the central part of Malta. Unlike many of Malta's ancient villages, Iklin developed primarily in the late 20th century as a residential suburb, carved out of the fertile agricultural valleys between Lija, Birkirkara, and Naxxar. The name "Iklin" is derived from the wild rosemary herb (rosmarinus officinalis), which used to grow abundantly in the valley (Wied l-Iklin) that runs through the area.
The town is divided into two distinct parts: the lower area, which contains commercial outlets and busier roads, and the upper residential area, which is characterized by quiet, tree-lined streets and large, modern villa estates. Iklin offers a peaceful, high-quality residential environment with easy access to the surrounding historic towns, making it a pleasant and convenient base for exploring central Malta.
When to Visit
Iklin is a residential area and can be visited year-round. The spring months (March to May) are particularly pleasant, as the surrounding valleys and green spaces are lush and the weather is ideal for walking. The autumn months also offer comfortable temperatures for exploring the central region of the island.

Within the town, the residential streets are quiet and easily walkable, though the terrain can be hilly in the upper parts of the villa area.

WhatsAppCuisine
Iklin features a selection of modern cafes, bistros, and restaurants, particularly along its main commercial roads. The dining options here lean toward contemporary Mediterranean and Italian cuisines, catering to the local resident population. For traditional Maltese food, the historic towns of Lija, Balzan, and Naxxar are just a short walk or drive away, offering classic Maltese restaurants and traditional band clubs.
Culture & Festivals
As a relatively modern town, Iklin does not have the centuries-old parish feast traditions of its neighbors. However, the town celebrates the Feast of Saint Michael on the Sunday closest to September 29. The celebration is centered around the historic Chapel of Saint Michael, featuring a small and charming community gathering with religious services and local band performances.
