Gudja is a historic local council located in the Southern Region of Malta, situated on a low-lying plateau just adjacent to Malta International Airport. Despite its proximity to the country's main aviation hub, Gudja has preserved its traditional Maltese village character, characterized by narrow winding streets, limestone houses with wrought-iron balconies, and quiet, sun-drenched squares. The village's history dates back to medieval times, when it served as an important administrative and religious center for the surrounding hamlet communities.
For travelers, Gudja offers a peaceful escape and an authentic glimpse into Maltese rural life. The village is dominated by its impressive parish church, which is visible from miles around, and is surrounded by fertile agricultural land. Its architectural heritage, spanning from the medieval period to the rule of the Order of Saint John, makes it a rewarding stop for history enthusiasts exploring the southern part of the Maltese archipelago.
When is the best time to visit?
The best time to visit Gudja is during the spring (April to June) and autumn (September to October) when the weather is warm and pleasant, ideal for walking through the village's historic streets. Summer (July and August) can be intensely hot, though it coincides with Malta's vibrant village feast season. For music lovers, the late spring is particularly appealing due to the annual Bir Miftuħ International Music Festival, which takes place in the historic medieval chapel on the outskirts of the village.

WhatsAppHow do you get around?
Gudja is easily accessible by road and public transport. Due to its location next to Malta International Airport, numerous bus routes connect Gudja to Valletta, the Three Cities, and other parts of the island. Within the village itself, the best way to get around is on foot, as the historic core is compact and features narrow streets that are difficult to navigate by car. Taxis are readily available from the nearby airport, and car rentals provide easy access to the rest of southern Malta.

Gudja's culinary scene is centered around traditional Maltese fare. Visitors can enjoy classic pastizzi (flaky pastries filled with ricotta or mushy peas) from local pastizzerias, as well as hearty dishes such as stuffat tal-fenek (rabbit stew) and Bragioli (beef olives). The village cafes and local band clubs serve as excellent spots to try Maltese coffee, local Cisk beer, and Ftira (a traditional crusty sourdough bread topped with olive oil, tomatoes, tuna, capers, and olives).
What is the culture like?
Gudja is rich in religious and community traditions. The village celebrates three major annual feasts (festi): the Feast of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary on August 15, the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary in October, and the Feast of Saint Joseph on the last Sunday of October. These events feature elaborate street decorations, brass band marches, and spectacular fireworks. Culturally, the Bir Miftuħ International Music Festival, organized by the heritage trust Din l-Art Ħelwa, is a major highlight, hosting classical music performances in a medieval setting.
