Ghasri

Għasri is the smallest and one of the most pricey local councils on the island of Gozo. Located in the northern part of the island, it is nestled between the hills of Għammar and l-Għaqba. The village is characterized by its sparse population, vast expanses of agricultural land, and traditional Gozitan farmhouses, many of which have been converted into luxury villas. Għasri has remained largely untouched by modern commercial development, maintaining a purely rural and agrarian character.

The village is renowned for its natural beauty, particularly its valleys and rugged coastline. For travelers, Għasri represents the ultimate retreat, offering quiet country lanes, dramatic coastal scenery, and a slow, peaceful pace of life that feels far removed from the modern world.

Għasri is particularly beautiful in the winter and spring (November to April), when the countryside is lush, green, and ideal for walking and cycling. The summer months (June to September) are perfect for swimming, snorkeling, and diving in the spectacular coastal inlets, though the weather can be very hot. The village feast in June is a great time to experience local culture.

Għasri is connected to Gozo's capital, Victoria, by bus route 309, which runs approximately every hour. Due to the village's rural nature and spread-out attractions, renting a bicycle, car, or using taxis is highly recommended. The village center is small and easily walked, and there are numerous scenic walking paths leading to the coast and neighboring villages.

Għasri's cuisine is traditional, rustic Gozitan fare. Because the village is small, dining options within the village core are limited, but nearby towns offer excellent restaurants. Visitors can enjoy local Gozitan sheep's cheese (ġbejniet), fresh tomatoes, capers, and olive oil, often sourced directly from local farms. Traditional dishes like rabbit stew, baked pasta, and fresh seafood are staples of the local diet.

The village community is close-knit and deeply traditional. The annual parish feast is dedicated to Corpus Christi (the Patronage of Our Lady) and is celebrated in early June. The feast is a relatively intimate but beautiful affair, featuring traditional street decorations, band marches, and religious processions through the village's quiet streets.
