Overview

Għarb is a traditional and highly scenic local council located in the westernmost part of the island of Gozo. The name "Għarb" is the Arabic word for "West," reflecting its geographical position on the island. It is one of Gozo's oldest villages, established as a parish in 1679, and has retained an exceptionally high degree of its rural charm. The village is characterized by its historic stone houses, many featuring finely carved limestone balconies, and its quiet, slow-paced lifestyle centered around a beautiful baroque parish square.

Surrounded by some of Gozo's most fertile agricultural valleys and dramatic coastal cliffs, Għarb is a haven for travelers seeking peace, nature, and cultural depth. The village is highly regarded for its traditional crafts, agricultural produce, and its deep-rooted religious folklore, making it a cornerstone of Gozitan heritage.

When to Visit

The spring months from February to May are ideal for visiting Għarb, as the surrounding valleys are vibrant green and perfect for hiking. Summer (June to September) is ideal for coastal exploration, though temperatures can be high. Autumn is another excellent time, especially October, when the feast of San Dimitri is celebrated. Winter is peaceful, offering a cozy atmosphere in converted traditional farmhouses.
