Overview

Fontana, known locally as It-Triq tal-Għajn (the way of the spring), is a small municipality located in the heart of Gozo, Malta. It lies in a fertile valley directly south of Victoria, Gozo's capital, along the main route leading to the coastal resort of Xlendi. The locality is defined by its freshwater springs, which have supported agriculture and domestic life in the area for centuries.

The local council area is largely residential, characterized by traditional limestone houses and a quiet, slow-paced atmosphere. It acts as a gateway between Victoria and the southwestern coast of Gozo, making it a frequent pass-through for travelers.

When to Visit

Fontana is a year-round destination, but the best times to visit are during the spring months (March to May) when the surrounding Lunzjata Valley is lush, green, and ideal for walks. The summer months (June to September) are hot and dry, making it a convenient stopover on the way to the beach at Xlendi.

The annual parish feast dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus is celebrated on the third Sunday of June. The village is decorated with lights, banners, and street decorations, featuring lively band marches and fireworks.

Cuisine

The local gastronomy is typically Gozitan, featuring fresh local produce, sheep's milk cheeselets (ġbejniet), and crusty Maltese bread. While there are few dining spots in the village itself, the neighboring towns of Victoria and Xlendi offer a wide variety of traditional and Mediterranean restaurants.

Traditional bakeries and small snack bars in the area serve pastizzi (flaky pastries filled with ricotta or peas) and Gozitan ftira (flatbread topped with local ingredients).

Culture & Festivals

The culture of Fontana is closely tied to its religious parish and its historical springs. The parish church, dedicated to the Sacred Heart, is the center of community life and hosts the village's main religious celebrations.

The local wash houses, built in the 16th century by the Knights of St. John, represent a key cultural monument where local women historically gathered to wash clothes and socialize.
