Fgura is a modern, bustling town located in the southern region of Malta. Unlike many of Malta’s historic villages which date back to the medieval period or the era of the Knights, Fgura developed rapidly during the mid-to-late 20th century. It transitioned from a small agricultural hamlet of just a few farmhouses into a dense, vibrant residential and commercial center, making it one of the most populated localities on the island today.
The town is characterized by its busy commercial activity. The main thoroughfare, Zabbar Road, is one of the primary shopping districts in southern Malta, lined with a wide array of retail shops, cafes, supermarkets, and businesses. A key landmark of the town is the Parish Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, a unique structure built in a contemporary, tent-like architectural style that stands out against Malta's traditional Baroque landscape.
When is the best time to visit?
Fgura is primarily a commercial and residential hub, making it a year-round destination for shopping and dining. However, the best time to visit for a cultural experience is during the second week of July. During this time, the town celebrates its annual parish feast dedicated to Our Lady of Mount Carmel, which transforms the modern streets with colorful banners, lights, marching bands, and traditional Maltese fireworks.
