Overview

Dingli is a peaceful, rural village located on a high plateau on the western coast of Malta. Perched at approximately 253 meters above sea level, it represents the highest geographic point on the Maltese Islands. Unlike the bustling, urbanized eastern coast of Malta, Dingli has retained a quiet, agricultural character, defined by terraced fields, traditional farming practices, and open countryside.

The primary attraction of this locality is the dramatic Dingli Cliffs, which plunge sheer into the Mediterranean Sea below. Perched on the edge of these cliffs is the tiny, historic Chapel of St. Mary Magdalene, which has stood as a landmark for seafarers since the 17th century. The area is also situated immediately adjacent to Buskett Gardens, one of Malta's very few semi-natural woodlands, which was originally planted by the Knights of St. John as a private hunting reserve.

When to Visit

Dingli is highly popular throughout the year, but the winter and spring months (November to May) are particularly beautiful. During this period, the cliffs and surrounding countryside are lush, green, and carpeted with Mediterranean wildflowers, making it the ideal season for hiking. Regardless of the time of year, visiting in the late afternoon is highly recommended, as Dingli Cliffs are widely considered the premier spot in Malta to witness the sunset over the open sea.

Dingli is connected by public bus routes to Valletta and the nearby historic towns of Rabat and Mdina. For travelers wishing to explore the wider rural area, including Buskett Gardens and the Clapham Junction cart ruts, renting a car or hiring a taxi is highly convenient. Within the village center, everything is walkable, but the walk from the village core to the cliff edge takes about 15 to 20 minutes.

Cuisine

Dingli is one of the best places in Malta to experience authentic, rustic Maltese cuisine. The village and its outskirts feature several traditional restaurants that specialize in country-style cooking. The signature dish here is fenkata (rabbit stew), alongside other traditional meats such as slow-cooked horse meat (laħam taż-żiemel). Dishes are typically accompanied by local sourdough bread, fresh sheep's milk cheeselets (ġbejniet), and robust local red wines.

Culture & Festivals

The cultural life of Dingli is closely tied to agricultural traditions and religious celebrations. The village parish feast, dedicated to the Assumption of Our Lady, is celebrated on the first Sunday after August 15th. Additionally, the neighboring Buskett Gardens host the ancient festival of L-Imnarja (Feast of St. Peter and St. Paul) on June 29th. This major national festival features agricultural competitions, animal exhibits, traditional fried rabbit dinners, and Maltese folk singing (għana).
