Why visit?

Bormla, also known by its title Cospicua, is a historic fortified city located in the Grand Harbour region of Malta. Along with its sister cities Birgu (Vittoriosa) and Isla (Senglea), it forms the "Three Cities," a trio of historic maritime settlements that played a crucial role in Malta's history. Bormla is the largest of the Three Cities, situated in the inlet between Birgu and Senglea. It is surrounded by two massive lines of fortifications: the inner Firenzuola Lines and the outer Cottonera Lines, built by the Knights of St. John in the 17th and 18th centuries.

Bormla has a rich industrial and maritime heritage, having served as Malta's primary naval dockyard under both the Knights and British colonial rule. In recent years, the city has experienced a major revival. The historic Dock 1 area has been beautifully restored into a landscaped pedestrian waterfront, connecting Bormla with Birgu and transforming the industrial harbor into a scenic recreational space.

When is the best time to visit?

The best times to visit Bormla are during the spring (April to June) and autumn (September to November) when the weather is perfect for exploring the fortifications and walking along the harbor. Bormla's main parish feast, the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, is celebrated on December 8th. This is one of the most important religious feasts on the island, characterized by solemn processions, decorated streets, and traditional brass band music.
