Overview

Birgu, also known by its title Vittoriosa, is one of Malta's oldest and most historic maritime cities. Situated on a narrow peninsula projecting into the Grand Harbour, Birgu, along with Senglea (Isla) and Cospicua (Bormla), forms the historic region known as the "Three Cities." When the Knights of the Order of St. John arrived in Malta in 1530, they chose Birgu as their capital instead of Mdina, establishing their headquarters at Fort St. Angelo at the tip of the peninsula. The city played a heroic role in the Great Siege of 1565, successfully resisting the Ottoman forces, which earned it the honorary name Città Vittoriosa (Victorious City).

Today, Birgu is a captivating destination that showcases Malta's rich medieval and military history. The city is characterized by its massive bastions, beautifully preserved palaces, and the Collacchio—the historic core of narrow, winding alleys that housed the Knights' residences. The waterfront, once a busy naval dockyard, has been transformed into a scenic promenade lined with restaurants, cafes, and a modern superyacht marina.

When to Visit

The best times to visit Birgu are during the spring (April to June) and autumn (September to November) when the weather is warm and pleasant for walking. A highlight of the local calendar is Birgufest, held annually in October. During this festival, the city's streetlights are switched off, and the medieval streets of the Collacchio are illuminated entirely by the glow of thousands of candles, accompanied by musical performances and cultural exhibitions.

Getting Around

Birgu is highly accessible, and the most scenic way to reach it is from Valletta via the Grand Harbour ferry or a traditional Maltese wooden boat (dghajsa). Regular public bus routes also connect Birgu to Valletta and other parts of the island. Within Birgu, the historic streets are narrow, steep, and pedestrian-friendly, making walking the best and most practical way to explore.

Culture & Festivals

Birgu possesses a strong cultural identity with active community associations. The city celebrates two major religious feasts: the Feast of St. Lawrence in early August and the Feast of St. Dominic later in the same month. These celebrations feature decorated streets, brass band marches, and elaborate firework displays. The annual Birgufest in October is the city's premier cultural event, celebrating Birgu's history and art through the candlelight illumination.
