Overview

Attard is a historic town situated in the central region of Malta. Together with its neighbors Balzan and Lija, it forms part of the "Three Villages," a prestigious group of residential localities renowned for their grand architectural heritage, narrow winding streets, and lush, walled citrus orchards. Historically, Attard has been a preferred enclave for Maltese nobility and the island's affluent classes, a character that is still reflected in its elegant palazzos, stately villas, and quiet, refined atmosphere.

The defining landmark of Attard is the San Anton Palace, built in the early 17th century by Grand Master Antoine de Paule. Today, this historic palace serves as the official residence of the President of Malta. The palace is surrounded by the expansive San Anton Gardens, which have been open to the public since the late 19th century and stand as one of the island's most beautiful and popular botanical spaces, featuring mature trees, ornamental ponds, and stone fountains.

When to Visit

The ideal times to visit Attard are during the spring months of April to June and the autumn months of September to November. During these periods, the weather is warm and pleasant, avoiding the intense heat of the mid-summer months. Spring is particularly beautiful, as the village's famous citrus orchards and the public gardens are in full bloom. A unique local highlight is the annual Citrus Festival (Festa taċ-Ċitru), typically held in January or February within the grounds of San Anton Palace, where visitors can buy fresh local oranges and sample citrus-infused traditional sweets.

Cuisine

Dining in Attard ranges from casual cafes to upscale restaurants housed in converted historic buildings. The local cuisine emphasizes traditional Maltese flavors, with signature dishes such as fenkata (slow-cooked rabbit stew), bragioli (stuffed beef olives), and fresh seafood. Due to Attard's long-standing citrus heritage, local oranges and lemons are frequently used in desserts, preserves, and traditional beverages. The village also features charming tea gardens and cafes situated near its historic sites, offering perfect spots to enjoy a pastizz (savory pastry) and tea.

Culture & Festivals

Attard's cultural calendar is centered around traditional Maltese community events and religious feasts. The biggest event of the year is the parish feast dedicated to the Assumption of Our Lady, celebrated on August 15th. This week-long celebration sees the streets decorated with elaborate banners and lights, accompanied by brass band marches and vibrant firework displays. The San Anton Gardens also serve as a cultural hub, hosting open-air theatrical performances, Shakespearean plays during the summer, and annual flower shows.
