Overview

Mopti Region is the cultural crown of Mali, home to some of West Africa's most remarkable heritage sites. The region encompasses the Niger Inland Delta, the legendary city of Djenné with its monumental mud mosque, and the Bandiagara Escarpment (Dogon Country) — a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Mopti city, built on three islands at the confluence of the Niger and Bani rivers, is a bustling port town known as the "Venice of Mali."

The region is ethnically diverse, with Fulani, Dogon, Bozo, and Songhai peoples living side by side. The inland delta creates a unique ecosystem of waterways, lakes, and floodplains that sustains fishing, rice cultivation, and livestock.

When to Visit

The dry season (November–March) is the best time to visit. The Festival of Djenné takes place during this period. The flooding season (August–October) transforms the delta, making boat travel possible.
