Kita
Kayes, Mali
Why visit Kita?
Kita is the capital of the Kita Cercle in the Kayes Region of western Mali, lying on the eastern slope of Mount Kita (Bambara: Kita-kulu), a hill known for caves and rock paintings and historically referred to as Guénou Kourou ("old Kita") — a name, shortened to Kita Kourou, still used locally for the historic core. Oral tradition preserved by griots links the area's early settlement to migrations during the 13th-century founding of the Mali Empire under Soundiata Keita, and the town has long drawn a mix of Mande peoples, including Bambara and Malinké communities. Kita lies on the Dakar–Niger Railway and has historically been the largest transit point between Bamako (about 180 km away) and Kayes (about 330 km away). The town also has a notable local music history: Kita's dance-band orchestra, led by Boureima Keita, was one of several well-known ensembles in Mali alongside the Rail Band and Pioneer Jazz.
